Thursday, Sept. 25

Highlights:

  • This morning during Health, we made our Orange Shirt Day ribbons for tomorrow. On the ribbon we wrote how we want to feel/how all children should feel at school. Ask me what I wrote. 
  • We had our first music sharing! Ask me if I shared today.
  • For Literacy, we reviewed the rest of our digraphs. Ask me to tell you the what the digraphs were, the sounds they make, and what words I wrote!
  • For Math, we practiced representing numbers in word form, standard form, and expanded form. We solved puzzles and used a new tool called place value disks. Ask me to tell you about the activities. 

  • During our reading rotations, some of us got to go to the library for the first time! 
  • This afternoon, we read the book called Buffalo Wild and hung our respect stars in the prairie. We also got to see our buffalo rope and touch it with gentle hands. Ask me to show you at the Open House today! 



Reminders
  • Today is our Welcome to the New Year Open House! It will be running between 5:00 - 7:00pm. Families are welcome to drop in at anytime during the 2-hour period.
  • Tomorrow is Orange Shirt Day. Students are encouraged to wear anything orange if they do not have an orange shirt.
  • There is no school Monday or Tuesday next week.

Monday, Sept. 22

Highlights:

  • This morning, we talked about how we can make others feel welcomed, cared for, and safe. Ask me to give you an example. 
  • During Music, we played a beat pattern game. Ask me to tell you about it. 
  • For Literacy, we read a book called You Are Enough and talked about how everyone is different or unique but we all belong. Then, we designed a our own puzzle piece for our class puzzle. Ask me what I put on mine! 

  • For Math, we learned how to represent numbers in expanded form. Ask me to show you how to expand the number 64, 213 and 4, 891. 

  • This afternoon, we practiced our reading rotation stations. Ask me what ones I did today. 
  • For Makers Space, we read a book called Collaboration Station. We then designed a creation using a paper plate. Ask me what collaboration means and about my design.

  • On Thursday from 5:00 - 7:00pm it will be the Welcome to the New Year Open House. Families are welcome to drop in at anytime during the 2-hour period.

Highlights:

  • This morning, we had some finish up time!
  • During P.E., we played Freedom Frenzy. Ask me what I played after Gaga Ball. 
  • In Health, we read a book called All Are Welcome. Ask me what the book was about!
  • During Literacy, we used picture to practice writing different sentence types. Ask me what I wrote about. 
  • For Feel Safe Friday, we did a sharing circle. Today, we talked about what we like about ourselves and how we show others love or care. Ask me what I shared. 
  • In Field Study, we looked for natural and processed things around our school. Ask me what I saw today. 


Reminders:
  • As a part of our learning this year, we will be using technology. Students are welcome to bring wired headphones to use during these times. Please label with names. 

September 30th is a National Day for Truth and Reconciliation meant to commemorate the history and legacy of Residential Schools in Canada. On Friday, September 26th, students are encouraged to wear an orange shirt or something else with orange to recognize Orange Shirt Day and the National Truth and Reconciliation Day. 

Students will be engaging in learning next week to honor this important day. Through read alouds and activities, students will focus on understanding what they each need to feel safe and cared for at school and to consider this question: “What action can each member of our school community do to make sure every student feels safe and cared for at school, everyday?” This week is an opportunity for Northern Lights students and staff to come together in the spirit of reconciliation to show their support of a safe, respectful and caring school community.

Thursday, Sept. 18

   Highlights:

  • During Health, we learned about making S.M.A.R.T. goals and made a goal for the number of laps we would run during our Terry Fox run. Ask me what my goal was and how many laps I ran today. 

  • This morning, we ran with all the Grade 3s! 
  • For Math, we counted our Terry Fox donations. This helped us practice our skip counting skills. Ask me how much our class raised!
  • In Social Studies, we created our land acknowledgement page in our visual journals. We got to use different art supplies to create a nature background. Ask me what I used and what I made with it. 
  • This afternoon, we did the Terry Fox run with our Kinder buddies. Ask me who my buddy was and how many laps we did together.

  Highlights:

  • This morning, we had some finish up time to work on ketchup list. Ask me what I finished today.  
  • During Music, we practiced making beats with our body. Ask me to show you an example. 
  • For Literacy, we read a book called Meet Terry Fox and watched a video to learn more about him. In the afternoon, we drew a picture and wrote some facts we learned. 


  • For Math, we learned how to use Base-10 drawings to represent 4 digit numbers. Ask me to show you how to draw these numbers. 
  • This afternoon, we had our library orientation. Ask me what I need to remember when I use the Library.
  • For Social, we learned about the land acknowledgement and practiced pronouncing the different names. We also watched the land acknowledgement from the Calgary Public Library. Ask me to show you some of the actions that go with the acknowledgement.

 Highlights:

  • This morning, we had some finish up time to work on Medicine Wheel. Ask me what I added. 
  • During P.E., we played the Last Person Standing. Ask me how far I got today!
  • For Literacy, we used a picture to practice writing the four different sentence types. Ask me what sentences I wrote!
  • For Math, we talked about place value vs. the value of digit. Ask me how to put the numbers in the chart below and the value of the underlined numbers. 
  • During Reading, we learned two new rotations, listening to reading and writing. Ask me what books I chose on Epic and what I wrote about. 
  • For Science, we did a see, think, wonder with a set of pictures to introduce our next unit. We then learned about natural and processed. Ask me to give you some examples.

Highlights:

  • This morning, we had some finish up time to complete the things we started last week. Ask me what I worked on today!
  • During P.E., we played the Last Person Standing. Ask me how to play this game.
  • Today is Dot Day! To celebrate, we read the book called The Dot. Ask me how the character changed from the beginning to the end of the book. We also got a new mindfulness dot sheet. Ask me to tell you what I created.  


  • During Literacy, we also reviewed some of the digraphs. Ask me what ones we did today. 
  • For Math, we did a check in. Ask me what tasks we did. 
  • During Reading, we learned a new rotation called loose parts. Ask me about the centre and what I wrote using it. 
  • For Science, we talked about what it means to be a scientist and watched a demonstration. We practiced making hypothesis and observations. Ask me what I observed.

Highlights:

  • This morning in Health, we talked about what it means to have a growth mindset and drew example in our visual journals. Ask me to give you examples of what a growth mindset sounds like!
  • During Music, we played Poison Rhythm. Ask me how to play!
  • For Field Study, we read a book called Me and My Sit Spot and then went outside to visit our sit spots. We reflected on the week, chose a goal for next week, and enjoyed the nice around us. Ask me where our sit spot is and what I thought about!

  • During Social Studies, we worked on our medicine wheels. Ask me what I added and want to add!

Thursday, Sept. 11

     Highlights:

  • This morning in Art, we finished our pipe cleaner sculptures! Ask me to show you mine and tell you what it means!


  • We played Moustache Ball again during P.E.
  • For Math, we practiced skip counting by 3s as a warm up before learning a new game. After playing our game, we started learning about place value. Ask me to show you the game if we have a deck of cards and tell you how to put the numbers into the place value chart!


  • During Reading, we learned a new word work game. See if you can help me find the mystery word. 

  • For Social Studies, we talked about what it means to be healthy and the medicine wheel. Ask me one way In can take care of my heart, mind, body, and spirit. We will be creating a visual page to represent our ideas.

    Highlights:

  • This morning in Health, we read The Magical Yet and talked about growth mindsets. We also did a fun activity to help us remember to never give up. Ask me what the activity was!

  • During P.E., we played Moustache Ball. Ask me how to play!
  • In Literacy, we started our class novel Third Grade Angles. Ask what happened in the first two chapters. 
  • For Math, we did an esti-mystery learned a new math game called friendly concentration. Ask me about the esti-mystery and to tell you about the game. 
  • During Reading, we learned how to play Kaboom, Pop, and Word Around. Ask me what ones I tried today. 
  • For Art, we started making "about me" sculptures with pipe cleaners. Ask me what I added so far!
